When the Waters Rise

As I have mentioned before, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer about 6 months ago.  She visited with doctors, went through 6 rounds of chemo, lost her hair, had a double mastectomy, and all the while, never stopped praising God.  And God healed her completely.

During her battle, she would constantly tell people that she was trusting in God, and that was a chance for her to tell others about what He has done in her life.  She had every excuse to be filled with fear, but she instead chose to show love and strength.  What an inspiration!

I heard a song at church one sunday that completely reminded me of her awesome attitude through the entire ordeal, and I wanted to share that with you.  Click the “play” button above and read along:

You are, holding me together

with hands that hold forever

God You are strong

And when the storm around me rages

Your love never changes

God You are strong

And You are with me Lord,

Always with me Lord

When the waters rise around me I am safe

In the valley Lord, You are near always

You have me surrounded by your grace

When my strength is gone, I wont be afraid

You are with me always

My refuge, when the walls have fallen

You are near the broken

God You are strong

For You make beauty from the ashes

with love that never ceases

God You are strong

When there seems no way,

You are here with me

And this life brings pain,

You are here with me

I wont be afraid,

You are here with me

You are all I need

and You are here with me

When the waters rise around me I am safe

In the valley Lord, You are near always

You have me surrounded by your grace

When my strength is gone, I wont be afraid

You are with me always

My mom’s faith is something that I think very few people would have if pressed the way she was.  But she knew that even though her life was at risk, God would heal her, because that’s what God does to the faithful.  She is living proof!

Thanks for being such an inspiration, mom.  I pray that my faith, if ever put to the test like that, will be like yours!

Third Day – “Move” album review

Move

I have been a Third Day fan since 1994, and since then, I have purchased every bit of media they have released, as well as seen them in concert around 35 times.  Needless to say, I have listened to a LOT of Third Day in the last 16 years.  Their latest album, Move, is easily their best album in a long time, if not of all time.  Musically, there isn't a lot of new ground broken here, but lyrically, it has been taken up several notches.

On Third Day's self-titled release from 1995, their lyrics were what I like to call "straight-up Gospel".  In other words, there was no fluff, just Biblical truth.  Songs like "Holy Spirit" and Praise Song" were written like it was straight from the Bible.  Over the years, Third Day seemed to move away from that to a degree, which is fine, but on this new release, they are back to presenting the truth of the Gospel in music form.  Take the song "Children of God", for example:

Praise to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Our God and our King, to Him we will sing.
In His great mercy, He has given us life.
Now we can be called the children of God.

It's like reading an old hymn.  Another example, from "Trust in Jesus":

One of these days we all will stand in judgement
for every single word that we have spoken
One of these days we all will stand before the Lord
give a reason for everything we've done
And what I've done is trust in Jesus

See what I mean?  It's not your "generic" kind of lyrics, but honest, Biblical truth.  This kind of songwriting is such a refreshment in a sea of rubber-stamp Christian music.

Musically, the album has the unmistakable southern-rock sound that Third Day has all but trademarked in the Christian Music scene.  Mac Powell's vocals are better than ever, which is hard to imagine.  The guitars are thick and crunchy, in a melt-your-face-off kind of way.

Overall, this album is nothing short of incredible.  Do yourself a favor and go buy it, crank it up to 11, and put it on repeat.  You will be very glad you did.
